Lexington and Its Environs

Historic Lexington, the heart of Rockbridge County, is nestled in southwestern Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, approximately fifty (50) miles south of Harrisonburg and fifty (50) miles north of Roanoke. It is home to two prestigious schools, the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and Washington and Lee University.

The town offers dozens of boutiques and restaurants, year-round activities at the Virginia Horse Center, and several historical sites of interest, including the Stonewall Jackson House, the George C. Marshall Museum at VMI, and Lee Chapel at Washington and Lee.

The Blue Ridge Parkway and the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests provide endless opportunities for wanderers, day-trippers, birders, and naturalists of all stripes. According to HikingUpward founder Tony Van Vugt, nearby Cold Mountain and Mount Pleasant offer the best hiking — and views — in the region. Further afield are Natural Bridge, famously described in Jefferson’s Notes on the State of Virginia, and a number of geologically significant limestone caves, including Luray Caverns.

The valley’s rich soil yields a wide range of locally grown produce. Visitors come from miles around to visit Polyface Farm, made famous in Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma, just 25 miles northwest of Lexington. Farm to You Market brings together the best local farmers and purveyors that Lexington has to offer.
